Sunday, October 19th is an important day for those living in The Woodlands TX. This year is the 40th Anniversary of the founding of The Woodlands by George Mitchell. In 1974, George Mitchell began building The Woodlands on 27,000 acres of land that he purchased from Grogan Lumber Company.
Residents may know the name George Mitchell, but who was this fascinating man who built The Woodlands? George Mitchell, born in May of 1919 in Galveston, Texas, grew into a man who would change lives. His parents were Greek immigrants who lived above a shoeshine shop. George didn’t come from a wealthy family. He had an appreciation for what it was like to struggle when trying to succeed.
George grew up to believe in giving back to the community and offering a helping hand to those who were less fortunate and trying to reach their potential. It was for this reason that he and his wife, Cynthia, dedicated their lives to making the world a better place.
George believed in supporting his hometown of Galveston and did much to help in the revitalization of the city. Another of his interests was in sustainability, and he was fascinated with urban planning. It was these interests that led him to create a master-planned community called The Woodlands. George’s vision was to have a community built around the concepts of protecting the environment while creating an urban environment that would be pleasing to those who lived within the master-planned community.
