Imagine walking outside in Autumn and being unable to see the beautiful leaves changing colors. Imagine not being able to succeed in school because you can’t see well enough to read and your family can’t afford to buy your glasses. Imagine not being able to support your family because you can’t afford a procedure that would fix your sight and enable you to begin working again. These may be instances that you have to use your imagination to experience, but for many people, this is an everyday reality.

TOMS was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie after he visited Argentina and saw children who didn’t have shoes to wear. His heart went out to the children who were unable to protect their feet with even the most basic of shoes. He founded a company that set out to provide one pair of shoes to a child who needed shoes for every pair of shoes that were sold. This is known as the One for One program. Since its beginning, TOMS has delivered over 10 million pairs of new shoes to children who needed them.

Deciding to build on to the One for One program, TOMS decided to reach out to those with vision impairments and founded the program for eyewear. With every pair of eyeglasses that are purchased, TOMS helps a person in need by either helping to get their sight restored or providing them with eyewear.

According to TOMS, visual impairment affects over 285 million people around the world. Those numbers seem overwhelming, but the good news is that there are ways to prevent and correct 80% of cases involving a visual impairment. TOMS helps secure surgery, glasses and other medical services that restore sight to individuals who would otherwise remain in a blurry or dark world.

Not only does TOMS provide help to individuals through medical procedures and eyewear, they also help fund clinics and hospitals. They give to the institutions that provide care for sight impaired people and to the people who are trained to help provide professional care for those in need. With this One for One program, TOMS has helped over 200,000 people throughout the world.

World Sight Day is held every year to bring awareness to the problems of blindness and visual impairment. One of the hardest facts to digest is that there are 19 million children who are blind or visually impaired. Unfortunately, the majority of visually impaired people live in countries that are struggling to develop.

It’s so important to support the organizations, like The Woodlands Children’s Museum when they do things to bring awareness to problems like this one. When you are looking for fun things to do with kids, it’s an added bonus if you can find an educational experience, as well. World Sight Day offers a chance to build awareness and promote a sense of compassion in children.

The Woodlands Children’s Museum is a wonderful place for children who are 7 years old or younger. There are a variety of exhibits to see and explore throughout the entire year, and they offer a family membership. For those wishing to pay per visit, the cost of entrance is a very affordable $5.00 for adults and children over 2 years of age. Children under 2 are allowed entrance for free. They are located at 4775 West Panthercreek Drive, #280. Keep in mind that all children must be accompanied by an adult during their visit to the museum.

For World Sight Day they are encouraging people to wear sunglasses inside to participate in a fun, reflective activity that raises awareness for blindness. The museum has planned several interactive fun things for kids to do while they are visiting. There will be a t-shirt stenciling activity, and children will be offered a free eye exam. Free eye exams are courtesy of Child and Family Eye Care in The Woodlands.
